OUR STORY
Formally, “Consilience” is a scientific term used to describe the convergence of a wide range of evidence resulting in a single, empirical truth. The strategy is derived from the ancient Greek concept of an “intrinsic orderliness” that “governs the cosmos”. The economist Frederic Hayek referred to a similar process as “Spontaneous Order”; progress that isn’t planned but set in motion.
The term “consilience” was popularized in 1998 by E.O. Wilson, the Harvard entomologist. Wilson believed the rise of the modern sciences caused an increasing fragmentation and specialization of knowledge. He set out to restore a unity of mission between academic disciplines — the sciences and the humanities.
Wilson referred to his mission as the ‘Ionian Enchantment’… “an endeavor as old as civilization itself, but it follows its own course — a stoic’s creed, an acquired taste, a guidebook to adventure plotted across rough terrain. It aims to save the spirit, not by surrender but by liberation of the human mind. Its central tenet, as Einstein knew, is the unification of knowledge. When we have unified enough certain knowledge, we will know who we are and why we are here.”
Our mission is not so ambitious, but the romantic in me likes a good purpose. Consilience, LLC will unify all our “fragmented” talents — through copy, product development, marketing and economic forecasting — to help the Paradigm Press, Three Founders Publishing and St. Paul Research to evolve into fully independent imprint with an antifragile array of franchises.
